Chilean born and proud mother of two. I am the Lead Designer behind Mabari & Mabari KIDS but could not bring about the complete work if it weren't for the incredible women and men behind the scenes. We attempt to preserve the ancient work of Kantha while having a ton of fun.
I am ecstatic that we are able to provide an income, empowerment for women while building a community of craftsmans doing an artform that has been around for centuries.
I am a Calcutta native. Can't help it - I am forever drawn to the aesthetic, fostering creativity is what I live for. I am eager to team up with Debora and be the go-to person behind the production of Kantharoos at Mabari KIDS. I work closely with skilled hardworking artisans who beside being phenomenal, are unafraid to try something new. The stories of these women and men include incredible hardship, it is my privilege to come alongside and support their craft. To create beauty and in return provide jobs that improve lives- it's a win-win for me.
". . . TO CREATE BEAUTY AND IN RETURN, PROVIDE JOBS THAT IMPROVE LIVES - IT'S A WIN-WIN FOR ME."
I am from a village in the outskirts of Calcutta. I started working when I was 15 years old. All the Kantha needlework skills I now have, I have learned from senior artisans in my village. After years of working under them, I was able to become independent and started taking orders from the city.
Today, I train and employ over 40 women depending on the volume of work. For these women, the stitching of Kantha not only provides an additional income they otherwise wouldn't have- we also become a community.
"FOR THESE WOMEN, THE STITCHING OF KANTHA NOT ONLY PROVIDES AN ADDITIONAL INCOME THEY OTHERWISE WOULDN'T HAVE - WE ALSO BECOME A COMMUNITY".
I started working for my brother-in-law at the age of 15 years.A few years later I joined a fashion house where I worked as a professional tailor for 10 years. I am now the owner of a small tailoring shop. All of my employees are dependant on my ability to supply work for them. I wouldn't do anything else, I very much enjoy what I do.
